You'll learn how to work with your anxiety instead of fighting it to stay clear, composed, and present when the stakes are high.

What You'll Learn

Mindfulness directly from Zen practice, NOT diluted McMindfulness

You’re Not Broken

Discover why performance anxiety isn't a personal flaw. Learn the stage fright formula, why mental control is largely an illusion, and how to set workable goals that lead to real progress.

Engage, Accept, and Detach

Learn the core of the READ method at the heart of Perform with Confidence. Immerse yourself in performing, let anxious thoughts pass without fighting them, and let detachment follow naturally.

Remember

Anchor your courage in core values. Learn why commitment, not confidence, is what gets you on stage and into the audition room, and how to call on your values when anxiety strikes.

Mindfulness in Action

Apply the READ method in a live, instructor-led performance event. The closest thing to the real pressure of performing in a structured, supportive setting.

Real-World Mindfulness

Take your READ skills beyond the classroom into everyday moments as a performer. Then use it in a higher-stakes performance situation of your choosing.

Keep On Keeping ON

Make what you've built yours forever. Carry the READ method forward past the course, deepen your mindfulness practice, and trust the skill you've earned.

Dr. David Lee Fish, Ph.D.

Creator of Perform with Confidence

Dr. David Lee Fish, Ph.D., founder of Rise Up Eight, has stood where you stand. He performed alongside Ella Fitzgerald and Little Richard, played the Montreux Jazz Festival, and earned a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology. He knows the stage.

He also knows what it is to freeze on it. One night, backing a major act in front of a full house, his nerves took over and his mind locked up, despite his talent and training. That moment sent him looking for an answer preparation alone could not give.

He found it in mindfulness. Dr. Fish studied Zen under Korean Master Seung Sahn, the same teacher who trained Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of modern mindfulness (MBSR).

From that lineage, and decades of performing and teaching, he built the READ method: a way to work with performance anxiety instead of fighting it. Not a cure, and not a trick. A workable way to stay present when it counts.

What People Are Saying

"I always knew the material. What I didn't know was how to stay in my own head when the room got big. The READ method gave me something to do with the panic instead of just drowning in it. My last show was the biggest I've played, and I didn't blank once."
— Marcus, Stand-Up Comedian

"Performing classical repertoire never scared me. My own work terrified me. This course helped me understand that the exposure I felt wasn't a weakness — it was the anxiety formula doing exactly what it does. Once I stopped fighting it, I could actually dance."
— Priya, Dancer

"I've handed out advice to students on stage firhgt for twenty years. Turns out I needed it just as badly. The lead role I was too scared to take seriously? I took it. Opened last month. Sold out three nights."
— Derek, Actor & Drama Teacher

"I thought performing personal work meant being okay with being destroyed by the audience's reaction. This course taught me the difference between being open and being unprotected. I performed my hardest poem last month. I didn't fall apart."
— Zara, Spoken Word Poet

"I turned down solo recitals before I found this course. I finally said yes to them. My hands still wanted to shake. But I knew what to do with that, and I played better than I thought I would."
— Claire, Classical Violinist

"My problem was never the performance. It was the week before. The canceling, the excuses, the spiral. Learning that anticipatory anxiety is part of the formula — not a sign I shouldn't be doing this — changed everything. I haven't canceled a show since."
— Tomás, Singer-Songwriter

"After I blanked at a local call for a national talent show, I started over-rehearsing, which somehow made it worse. This course helped me see that I wasn't under-prepared — I was fighting my own brain. I competed again last month. I remembered every word."
— Nia, Vocalist

"A remarkable course that teaches you how to relax and stop letting nerves get the best of you. Worth every minute."
— Karen, Operations Director

"I kept waiting to feel like I belonged up there. This course helped me realize that feeling might never fully go away — and that's okay. I don't need it to disappear. I just need to be able to play anyway. And now I can."
— Ray, Jazz Pianist

"My professors kept telling me I was talented and I kept not believing them when it mattered. Now I understand why the mainstage felt so different from the workshop — and I have an actual tool for when my brain tries to pull me offstage in my own head. This semester was the first time I felt like myself in a real production."
— Sofia, Theater Major
