Your core values give you a reason to speak even when anxiety makes it uncomfortable.

Engage means concentrating on speaking. Accept means allowing anxious thoughts and feelings without fighting them, then returning your attention.

Detachment follows from Remember, Engage, and Accept. You don’t force it.

A value is a direction, like a point on a compass. A goal is a destination.

READ is a skill to practice. The aim is greater workability, not a promise that you’ll never be nervous again.

What is the READ method?

READ is the framework at the heart of Speak with Confidence. It gives you something practical to do when Speech Fright, or performance anxiety when speaking in front of others, interrupts your concentration or tempts you to avoid speaking altogether.

The method changes how you respond to anxiety. You don’t have to win an argument with a nervous thought or make every sensation disappear before continuing. You practice returning to what you’re there to do, supported by the values that make doing it worthwhile.

Remember the core values that give you the courage and commitment to stand up to your anxiety.

Engage fully in speaking.

Accept anxious thoughts or feelings each time they disrupt your concentration, rather than fighting them, and return your attention to speaking.

Detachment from your anxiety follows, allowing you to enjoy a more workable situation.

Remember: what makes speaking worth the discomfort?

Remember means recalling the personal core values that give you the courage and commitment to act despite Speech Fright. It answers a question that a technique alone can’t: What matters to me in this situation, and what do I want to stand for?

Imagine a father preparing to speak at his daughter’s wedding. He may dread everyone looking at him, but he also values his love for his daughter and his role as her father. Those values give him a reason to stand up and speak, even with trembling hands.

The same applies at work. You might speak up because you value honesty, care about the people affected by a decision, or want to be a dependable member of your team. Your values can belong to one particular situation or to your broader role as a communicator, teacher, leader, or advocate.

A useful starting point is to complete this sentence: “Speaking is important to me because I value…” Choose something you actually care about, rather than something you think a good speaker ought to say. If speaking feels only like a duty, consider what you’d like to stand for while doing it.

How are values different from goals?

A goal is a destination. A value is a direction, like a point on a compass. Goals describe outcomes or improvements you want to achieve. Values describe what you want to stand for as you act. Goals are generally future-focused, while values can guide what you do in the present moment.

Honesty is a value. Speaking honestly is a goal derived from it. In a project meeting, honesty might guide you to explain a problem clearly rather than conceal it because you’re worried about how you’ll sound.

Call your values to mind before the speaking situation, as well as when anxiety strikes. You can write a short reminder on a note. You don’t have to keep reciting it while you speak; its purpose is to help you find the courage and commitment to take part.

Engage: return your attention to speaking

Engage means concentrating on the task at hand, which here is speaking. In a presentation, that may mean explaining the point on your current slide. In a conversation, it includes listening to what the other person asks and giving your answer.

Anxiety can draw you into checking yourself: “Is my voice shaking? Do I look nervous? Am I making a good impression?” Once you notice that distraction, return to the meaning you’re trying to communicate. You don’t have to finish inspecting your performance before taking part in the conversation.

Engagement isn’t a demand for uninterrupted concentration. Your attention will wander, especially when the stakes feel high. What matters is practicing the return, which brings us to Accept.

Accept: allow the interruption, then return

Accept means allowing an anxious thought or feeling to be present without fighting it. You may dislike the thought, and you don’t have to believe what it says. You accept that it has appeared, then return your attention to speaking.

Suppose the thought “They can hear how nervous I am” interrupts your explanation. You don’t need to prove it wrong or replace it with a more reassuring thought. Recognize the interruption and return to the point you’re explaining. If it happens again, accept and return again.

The finger trap analogy is useful here. Pulling harder makes the trap grip more tightly. Likewise, struggling to get rid of each nervous thought can leave you preoccupied with the struggle. Trying to knock down every worry becomes Thought Whack-A-Mole, taking attention from the speaking you want to do.

Acceptance also doesn’t mean surrendering to a poor outcome. “I want to do well, and I’m nervous” leaves room for both your standards and your present experience. You can care about doing a good job without making the absence of nerves a condition for doing it.

Detach: let the result follow

Detachment is the result of Remember, Engage, and Accept. Your values support your commitment to speak; you engage in speaking and accept interruptions rather than fighting them. Anxiety can then become less central to what you’re doing.

You can’t force that result by ordering yourself to detach. Nor do you need to stop repeatedly to check whether you feel detached yet. Keep applying the parts of READ that are actions, and assess progress through how workable the situation becomes.

What does READ look like in a meeting?

Imagine you need to raise a concern about a deadline. You know the project, but your manager is in the room and you’re worried about looking difficult. Your Internal Bodyguard has something to react to: Audience + Judgment + Threat = Speech Fright.

Before speaking, you recall that you value being dependable. That gives you a reason to explain the risk instead of leaving your colleagues unaware of it. You begin describing the concern and what the team needs to consider.

Your heart is pounding, and the thought “I’m making a mess of this” interrupts. You accept the thought without stopping to argue with it, then return to explaining the deadline. You may need to make that return several times.

Afterward, the useful questions concern workability. Did you raise the issue? Were you able to return when distracted? Did the team get the information you meant to share? Those observations tell you more about your progress than whether you managed to feel perfectly calm.

How do you practice READ?

Begin with ordinary opportunities to practice attention. While brushing your teeth, concentrate on the movement of the brush and the sensations in your mouth. When your thoughts wander, accept the distraction and return. You’re practicing a skill, not trying to achieve a permanently quiet mind.

Then bring the full method into a manageable speaking situation. Recall your values, take part, and practice accepting interruptions and returning to speaking. A brief contribution in a familiar meeting can give you experience before a higher-stakes presentation.

Afterward, note what you tried, what interrupted you, and how workable the situation felt. Choose one improvement to work toward next time. The practice is repeated application, rather than waiting for the one occasion when nerves never arrive.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to perform all four steps in order every time I get nervous?

READ gives you a framework, not a script to recite after every interruption. Recall your values before speaking and when you need courage or commitment. As you speak, Engage and Accept work together: accept the interruption and return to speaking. Detachment follows rather than becoming another task.

What if I can’t think of any values connected to speaking?

Start with the people affected by what you have to say. What do you care about in relation to them, or what kind of colleague, parent, teacher, or leader do you want to be? You can also ask what you’d like speaking to stand for if it currently feels only like an obligation.

Is acceptance a way to make anxiety disappear?

That isn’t the target. Using acceptance as a test of whether your anxiety has vanished can pull you back into monitoring it. Allow the thought or feeling, return to speaking, and judge progress by whether you can take part more workably.

Do I need to practice Zen or have experience with mindfulness?

No prior experience is needed to begin. The method draws on Dr. Fish’s training with Korean Zen Master Seung Sahn, and the exercises give you practical ways to develop the skill of noticing distraction and returning your attention.

What if my anxiety keeps interrupting me?

Keep practicing the return. Repeated interruptions don’t mean you’ve misunderstood READ. Remember what makes speaking matter, accept the anxious thought or feeling each time it disrupts your concentration, and return to what you’re saying.

Where to go from here

For the broader explanation of what sets this response in motion, read Speech Fright: Why It Happens and How to Tame It.
