None of that necessarily means you’re unprepared or lacking confidence. It means your threat-detection system thinks something important is about to happen.

Key takeaways

Pre-performance nerves are a normal response to anticipated threat.

You can become anxious before anything has actually gone wrong.

Preparation helps, but it doesn’t guarantee that your Internal Bodyguard will stay quiet.

Trying to force yourself to calm down can make nervousness more central.

The more useful goal is to make the situation workable and keep returning your attention to performing.

Your brain can react before the performance starts

Stage Fright doesn’t wait politely for you to walk onstage. It can start hours, days, or even weeks beforehand.

You may be driving to the venue, sitting backstage, waiting for an audition, or lying in bed the night before when the nervousness begins. Your mind starts running through possibilities: What if I make a mistake? What if they can tell I’m nervous? What if I don’t perform the way I know I can?

Your body can react to those thoughts almost as if the threat were already happening. Your heart speeds up. Your stomach tightens. Your breathing changes. You may feel restless, shaky, or suddenly exhausted.

That’s anticipatory Stage Fright. Your Internal Bodyguard is trying to protect you from a situation it expects to be threatening.

Why performing feels threatening

The basic formula I use to explain Stage Fright is:

Audience + Judgment + Threat = Stage Fright

First, there’s an audience. That audience may be hundreds of people, a panel of judges, a casting director, your teacher, or even one person whose opinion matters to you.

Second, you feel judged. Sometimes the judgment is formal, as in an audition or competition. Sometimes it’s simply your perception that people are evaluating you.

Finally, there’s a threat. Their judgment could affect something you care about, such as getting the role, earning the chair, pleasing your teacher, advancing in a competition, protecting your reputation, or simply feeling good about yourself afterward.

Once your brain sees those ingredients coming together, it doesn’t necessarily wait for the curtain to rise. The alarm can begin in advance.

Being nervous doesn’t mean you’re not ready

One of the most frustrating things about pre-performance anxiety is that it can happen even when you’ve prepared thoroughly. You’ve practiced the music, learned the role, drilled the choreography, or rehearsed the set, yet your body still reacts.

That’s because preparation and anxiety aren’t opposites. Preparation affects your readiness to perform. Stage Fright comes from perceived threat.

You can be very ready and still care deeply about the outcome. In fact, sometimes the more important the performance feels, the more strongly your Internal Bodyguard reacts.

So don’t automatically interpret nervousness as evidence that you need another three hours of practice. Sometimes it simply means the moment matters to you.

Why the nervousness often gets worse as the performance gets closer

The threat becomes more immediate as the event approaches.

A performance that’s three months away may feel abstract. A performance that’s tomorrow feels much more real. A performance that’s ten minutes away is no longer hypothetical.

You may also start paying closer attention to every sign of anxiety. You notice your stomach, your hands, your heartbeat, your breathing, and your thoughts. Then you begin asking whether you’re nervous enough to be worried about being nervous.

Now the original anxiety has company.

You aren’t only thinking about the performance. You’re also monitoring your reaction to it.

Trying to calm down can become another struggle

It’s natural to want the nervousness to stop. The problem begins when calm becomes a requirement.

You tell yourself, I need to calm down before I go out there. Then you check to see whether it’s working. If your heart is still racing, that becomes evidence that something is wrong. You try harder, monitor more closely, and give the anxiety even more attention.

It’s another version of the finger trap. The harder you pull, the tighter it becomes.

You can also end up playing Thought Whack-A-Mole, trying to suppress one nervous thought after another while new ones keep popping up.

A better goal isn’t, I must become calm before I perform. It’s, I can perform even if I’m nervous.

Don’t make zero nerves the goal

Wanting to never feel nervous before another performance is what I call a dead man’s goal. It’s the kind of goal only a dead person can guarantee.

There will probably always be some situations that matter enough to stir up anxiety. The useful question is not whether nervousness appears, but how much control you give it over what happens next.

That’s where workability becomes important.

A workable situation isn’t necessarily comfortable or anxiety-free. It’s a situation where you can still do what matters despite the discomfort.

What to do when you get nervous before performing

The approach I teach is the READ method: Remember, Engage, Accept, Detach.

Remember the core values that give you the courage and commitment to stand up to your anxiety.

Engage fully in performing.

Accept anxious thoughts or feelings each time they disrupt your concentration, rather than fighting them, and return your attention to performing.

Detachment from your anxiety follows, allowing you to enjoy a more workable situation.

You can begin READ well before you perform. In fact, that’s often better than waiting until you’re already onstage.

Remember why you’re doing this

Before the performance, remind yourself why it matters to you.

Maybe you value artistic expression, connection, courage, growth, excellence, serving the music, telling a story, or contributing to an ensemble. Whatever your values are, bring them to mind before the anxiety gets loud.

This gives you something more important to organize your behavior around than avoiding discomfort.

Engage with what’s actually happening

If you’re still waiting to perform, engage with the present moment instead of mentally performing the entire event in advance.

Notice your breathing. Feel your feet on the floor. Listen to what’s happening around you. Review the opening passage if that’s useful, then stop rehearsing imaginary disasters.

When it’s time to perform, your task changes. Engage fully with the music, scene, movement, text, or audience in front of you.

Accept the nervousness instead of fighting it

If your heart is racing, let it race. If your hands feel shaky, acknowledge it. If your mind throws out a nervous thought, notice it without arguing with it.

Acceptance doesn’t mean you like the feeling or want it to continue. It means you stop spending your limited attention fighting something that’s already there.

Then return your attention to the task at hand.

Let detachment follow

Detachment isn’t something you force yourself to achieve. It’s what can happen when you repeatedly engage with the task and accept the anxiety that interrupts you.

The nervousness may still be present, but it begins to matter less. Instead of being the center of the experience, it becomes something happening in the background while you perform.

Use the time before performing as practice

That uncomfortable waiting period before a performance can actually become useful training.

Notice your urge to check your symptoms, rehearse every possible mistake, or escape the situation. Then practice returning your attention to what you’re doing right now.

This is the same mental skill you’ll need once the performance begins. Every return is another rep.

What if I feel like canceling?

Sometimes anticipatory anxiety becomes so uncomfortable that the easiest solution seems obvious: don’t perform.

Canceling may bring immediate relief because the threat disappears. But if avoidance becomes your regular solution, Stage Fright begins deciding which opportunities you take and which ones you surrender.

If you notice the urge to back out, return to your values. Remember why you agreed to perform in the first place and ask whether avoiding the discomfort is more important than what the performance represents to you.

You don’t have to feel fearless to continue. You only need enough willingness to move forward while nervous.

Being nervous before performing can become more workable

The goal isn’t to reach the point where every performance feels completely comfortable. Some won’t.

The change comes when the pre-performance nerves stop seeming like an emergency. You recognize what’s happening, remember why you’re there, stop fighting the anxiety, and keep moving toward the performance.

Your Internal Bodyguard may still sound the alarm. You just don’t have to let it run the show.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calm down before a performance?

Don’t make complete calm a requirement. Reconnect with why the performance matters, bring your attention to the present moment, and allow nervous thoughts or sensations to be there without fighting them. The aim is to become more workable, not necessarily completely calm.

Why does my heart race before I perform?

Your body can react to an anticipated threat before the performance begins. When your Internal Bodyguard senses that an important, high-stakes event is approaching, your body’s fight, flight, or freeze response can produce physical symptoms such as a faster heartbeat.

Why do I feel sick before performing?

Physical discomfort can be part of the same threat response that produces shaking, sweating, or a racing heart. Your body is responding to the performance as something important and potentially threatening, even though you may know intellectually that you’re not in physical danger.

Why am I nervous even though I’ve practiced enough?

Preparation and Stage Fright aren’t opposites. You can be thoroughly prepared and still feel threatened by being watched, judged, or affected by the outcome. Your nervousness doesn’t automatically mean you need more practice.

Is it normal to be nervous days before a performance?

It can be. Stage Fright may begin well before the actual event because your brain can respond to an anticipated threat. The closer the performance gets, the more immediate that threat can feel.

Should I try to distract myself before I perform?

There’s a difference between healthy engagement and trying to run away from anxiety. Rather than desperately distracting yourself so you won’t feel nervous, practice putting your attention on the present task while allowing the nervousness to exist in the background.

What if my nerves get worse right before I go on?

That doesn’t mean the performance is doomed. The threat often feels most immediate just before you begin. Return to your values, accept the sensations that are already present, and put your attention on the first concrete thing you need to do when the performance starts.

Where to go from here

If your nervousness continues once you’re onstage, read How Do I Overcome Stage Fright?.

If you want to understand the larger process behind these reactions, see Stage Fright: Why It Happens and How to Tame It.

For the complete four-step approach, read The READ Method: Four Steps to Tame Stage Fright.

And if you want to experience the Perform with Confidence approach firsthand, begin with the free introductory lesson.

Dr. David Lee Fish, Ph.D. developed the READ method.
