Canceling, backing out, finding an excuse, or suddenly deciding the performance isn’t worth doing can all accomplish that.

The relief can be immediate, which is exactly why avoidance can become such a powerful trap. But feeling relieved after deciding to cancel doesn’t necessarily mean canceling was the choice you really wanted to make.

When anxiety starts pushing you toward the exit, the most useful question isn’t simply, Do I feel like performing? It’s this: What matters to me about this performance, and about being a performer?

Key takeaways

The urge to cancel can be a natural response to perceived threat.

Avoidance often brings immediate relief, which can make it more tempting the next time.

Wanting to cancel doesn’t necessarily mean performing is the wrong choice.

The R in READ, Remember, means reconnecting with the core values that give you courage and commitment.

Goals describe what you want to achieve. Values describe what you want to stand for.

The most workable decision is the one that best reflects your values, not simply the one that reduces anxiety fastest.

Why the urge to cancel can feel so convincing

Stage Fright isn’t just something that happens once you walk onstage. It can start hours, days, or even weeks before a performance. You think about the audition, recital, concert, competition, reading, or opening night and your mind starts running scenarios: What if I mess up? What if everyone notices? What if I’m not ready? Maybe I shouldn’t do this after all.

That last thought can feel surprisingly reasonable. But it may simply be your Internal Bodyguard proposing an escape route.

Audience + Judgment + Threat starts before the performance

The same formula that explains Stage Fright during a performance can explain why you want to avoid one beforehand:

Audience + Judgment + Threat = Stage Fright

You know an audience will be there. You expect some kind of judgment. And you believe something important may be threatened by that judgment, whether it’s your reputation, a role, a scholarship, a grade, a job, your standing with a teacher, or your sense of yourself as a capable performer.

Your brain doesn’t have to wait until the curtain rises to react. Once the threat feels real enough, your Internal Bodyguard can start looking for ways to protect you. Fight, flee, or freeze are old tools, and canceling fits very nicely into flee.

Why canceling can feel so good

Imagine you’ve spent three days dreading an audition. You’re tense, your stomach is bothering you, you’re barely sleeping, and your thoughts keep returning to everything that could go wrong. Then you decide not to go.

Relief. The audition is gone, the judgment is gone, and the threat is gone. Your Internal Bodyguard has done its job.

That relief is real, but there’s a catch. Your brain may learn something from the experience: I felt threatened. I escaped. I felt better. So the next time a similar performance comes along, avoidance may show up even faster.

Avoidance can quietly make your world smaller

One canceled performance probably doesn’t change your life. Sometimes canceling is absolutely the right decision. People get sick, injuries happen, emergencies arise, priorities change, and a performance can genuinely be a poor fit.

The issue is the pattern. You skip one audition because you’re nervous, then another. You stop volunteering for solos. You turn down opportunities that put you in the spotlight. You start choosing repertoire, roles, classes, ensembles, or situations based partly on how much anxiety they might provoke.

Little by little, Stage Fright starts making decisions for you. That’s when the problem becomes much bigger than feeling nervous.

Wanting to cancel doesn’t mean you should cancel

This distinction is important. A thought is not an instruction. I want to cancel may simply be one more anxious thought generated by a brain trying to protect you.

You don’t have to argue with it, replace it with something more positive, or obey it. This is where performers often get trapped in Thought Whack-A-Mole: I shouldn’t want to cancel. I need to be more confident. Stop thinking about backing out.

Now you’re fighting the thought instead of deciding what you actually want to do. A more workable approach is to notice the urge and then return to a better question: What matters to me about this performance, and about being a performer?

Remember: start with your core values

This is where the R in the READ method becomes especially important. Remember means recalling the core values that give you the courage and commitment to stand up to your anxiety.

Those values might include artistic expression, connection, growth, courage, excellence, service, honesty, commitment to an ensemble, or supporting the people you’re performing with. Your values are personal, and they can also change depending on the situation.

The important question is: What do I want to stand for here? Your anxiety may be saying, Get out. Your values may be saying, This matters to me.

Remembering those values doesn’t make the anxiety disappear. It gives you a reason to move forward despite it.

Values are different from goals

This distinction matters. In Perform with Confidence, I describe a goal as a destination and a value as a direction, like a point on a compass.

A goal describes something you want to achieve. You might want to worry less about being judged, perform more consistently, or feel more comfortable in auditions. Those are useful goals because they give you something specific to work toward.

Values are different. They describe what you want to stand for while you’re moving toward those goals. Honesty is a value; performing with honesty is a goal that can grow from it. Courage is a value; showing up for an audition despite anxiety might be a goal that expresses it. Connection is a value; communicating more directly with an audience might be a goal that follows from it.

Goals point toward an outcome. Values help guide what you do right now. That’s why values are so useful when you’re considering canceling. You may not know how the performance will turn out, but you can still decide what you want to stand for.

Think beyond this one performance

It also helps to widen the lens. Don’t ask only, What matters to me about tonight’s performance? Ask: What matters to me about being a performer?

Maybe performing is one of the ways you express yourself. Maybe you value growth through challenge. Maybe you value sharing music, inhabiting a role, telling a story, or connecting with other people. Maybe you simply want to become the kind of performer who keeps showing up when things get difficult.

Those broader values can be especially important when anxiety narrows your attention to one uncomfortable moment. Your Internal Bodyguard is thinking about escape. You can think about the performer you want to be.

Use values to help make the cancellation decision

Not every decision to cancel is avoidance. You may be sick or injured. There may be an emergency. The opportunity may no longer make sense. You may have legitimate professional, ethical, or safety concerns.

So don’t create a rigid rule that says you must always perform no matter what. Instead, return to Remember and ask yourself three questions:

What values do I want to bring to this performance?

What values do I want to bring to being a performer more broadly?

Which choice best reflects those values?

Sometimes the answer may genuinely be to cancel. An injury may make performing irresponsible. A family emergency may matter more. An opportunity may conflict with something else you value more highly.

But if the main reason you’re backing out is that performing will make you anxious, your values may point in the other direction. That’s what Remember is for. Your values give you the courage and commitment to do something that matters even when your Internal Bodyguard would rather escape the discomfort.

Don’t wait until you feel confident

One of the easiest traps is telling yourself you’ll decide once you feel better: If I calm down tomorrow, I’ll do it. If I feel confident before I leave the house, I’ll go. If the nerves don’t settle down, that’s probably a sign I shouldn’t perform.

Now you’ve made calmness a requirement for action. That’s an unreliable standard because the performance itself may be exactly what your Internal Bodyguard is reacting to.

You can be nervous and still choose to show up. You can want to escape and still walk through the door. Courage doesn’t require the absence of anxiety. It requires a reason to act despite it, and your values can provide that reason.

Use the READ method before the performance

The READ method isn’t something you need to save until you’re standing onstage. It can begin as soon as avoidance starts pulling at you.

Remember the core values that give you the courage and commitment to stand up to your anxiety.

Engage fully in performing.

Accept anxious thoughts or feelings each time they disrupt your concentration, rather than fighting them, and return your attention to performing.

Detachment from your anxiety follows, allowing you to enjoy a more workable situation.

Before the event, Remember may do most of the heavy lifting. Reconnect with your values, then engage with whatever the task at hand happens to be right now: pack your instrument, warm up, get dressed, drive to the venue, check in, and take the next concrete step.

When your mind interrupts with another escape plan, accept that the thought is there and return to the task.

Make the next step smaller

Anxiety likes to turn the entire performance into one enormous event. You don’t have to tackle the whole thing at once.

If your mind is shouting, I can’t possibly do this performance tonight, concentrate on the next action instead. Get out of bed. Eat something. Take a shower. Put the music in your bag. Drive to the theater. Walk backstage. Then deal with the next thing.

This isn’t a trick for pretending the performance isn’t coming. It’s simply engagement with the task at hand rather than engagement with every frightening possibility your mind can generate.

Don’t turn showing up into another dead man’s goal

There’s another trap here. Once you recognize avoidance, don’t replace it with an equally rigid rule: I must never cancel anything because of anxiety. That’s just another dead man’s goal.

The goal is workability. You want anxiety to have less control over your choices. Sometimes progress means performing despite a strong urge to escape. Sometimes it means recognizing that another value matters more in a particular situation.

What matters is that your decisions increasingly reflect what you want to stand for rather than an automatic effort to get rid of discomfort.

Showing up becomes an expression of your values

Each time you experience anxiety, remember what matters, accept the discomfort, and continue toward something you value, you get another rep. You learn: I can feel this and still act according to what matters to me.

That doesn’t guarantee the next performance will feel comfortable. It means the discomfort becomes more workable. And once Stage Fright stops automatically deciding whether you’ll show up, you’ve already taken away a great deal of its power.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to want to cancel a performance because I’m nervous?

Yes. The urge to escape a threatening situation is a natural part of the fight, flight, or freeze response. With Stage Fright, canceling can become a form of flight. The useful question is whether canceling reflects what matters to you or simply removes anxiety as quickly as possible.

How do I know whether I should cancel or push through?

Return to the R in READ: Remember. Identify the core values you want to bring to this particular performance and to being a performer more broadly, then ask which choice best reflects those values. Sometimes that will mean performing despite anxiety. Sometimes another value will legitimately point toward canceling.

How are values different from goals?

A goal is a destination. A value is a direction. Goals describe improvements or outcomes you want to achieve, such as worrying less about judgment or performing more consistently. Values describe what you want to stand for, such as courage, honesty, growth, connection, or commitment. Goals help you decide where you’re going. Values help guide how you act along the way.

Why do I suddenly feel like I don’t want to perform anymore?

Anticipatory anxiety can change how an upcoming performance feels. Something you genuinely wanted to do can suddenly seem pointless, unpleasant, or like a bad idea once your Internal Bodyguard senses threat. Remembering why performing matters to you can help separate those anxious impulses from your broader values.

Does avoiding performances make Stage Fright worse?

It can reinforce avoidance because canceling often produces immediate relief. Your brain can begin associating escape with safety, making avoidance more tempting when the next high-pressure situation appears.

Should I force myself to perform no matter what?

No. There can be legitimate reasons to cancel, including illness, injury, emergencies, safety concerns, or conflicts with something else you value more. The goal isn’t to create another rigid rule. It’s to make choices based increasingly on your values rather than automatically escaping anxiety.

What should I do if I want to cancel right before a performance?

Reconnect with the core values that make performing important to you, then concentrate on the next concrete action rather than the entire event. Allow anxious thoughts and feelings to be present without arguing with them and keep returning your attention to the task at hand.

Where to go from here

If your anxiety builds well before you go onstage, read Why Do I Get Nervous Before Performing?.

For a broader look at what’s happening when performance anxiety strikes, see Stage Fright: Why It Happens and How to Tame It.

If you want to understand how values fit into the full framework, read The READ Method: Four Steps to Tame Stage Fright.

And if you’d like to experience the Perform with Confidence approach firsthand, start with the free introductory lesson.

Dr. David Lee Fish, Ph.D. developed the READ method.
