That means changing your relationship with Stage Fright rather than fighting to eliminate it. It sounds counterintuitive, but that’s the key.

Key takeaways

You don’t need to eliminate Stage Fright to perform well.

Fighting nervous thoughts and physical symptoms can give them even more of your attention.

The goal is to make performing more workable, not to reach a state of zero anxiety.

Mindfulness helps you return your attention to performing instead of wrestling with your nerves.

The READ method gives you a practical way to do that when Stage Fright strikes.

First, change what you mean by “overcome”

When performers ask me how to overcome Stage Fright, they usually mean something like this: How can I stop getting nervous? That’s an understandable goal. The shaking, racing heart, self-doubt, nausea, blank mind, or urge to escape can be miserable.

But there’s a problem with making “never get nervous again” your goal. I call it a dead man’s goal. Only a dead person can guarantee they’ll never feel anxious again.

Stage Fright can appear anytime the right conditions come together:

Audience + Judgment + Threat = Stage Fright

You’re performing in front of other people. You believe they’re judging you. And their judgment matters to you in some way. Maybe you’re auditioning for a role you badly want, playing an important recital, or performing for a conductor, teacher, casting director, critic, or audience whose opinion carries weight.

Your Internal Bodyguard senses a threat and reacts. That’s why even a highly skilled, thoroughly prepared performer can still get nervous.

So overcoming Stage Fright doesn’t need to mean making sure it never appears again. A much more useful definition is this: Stage Fright no longer gets to decide how well you perform or whether you perform at all.

Why fighting Stage Fright can backfire

Remember those little woven finger traps you may have played with as a kid? You put your fingers into the ends and instinctively pull them apart to escape. The harder you pull, the tighter the trap becomes.

Stage Fright can work much the same way. You notice your hands shaking and think, I have to stop shaking. You hear a nervous thought and tell yourself, Don’t think that. You feel your heart pounding and start checking to see whether it’s slowing down.

Now part of your attention is on performing and another part is monitoring, correcting, suppressing, or arguing with your anxiety. You’re playing Thought Whack-A-Mole at exactly the moment you need that attention for your performance.

The harder you struggle with Stage Fright, the more central it can become.

Stop making calm a requirement for performing well

Here’s an important shift: You can be nervous and perform well at the same time. Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive.

Instead of telling yourself, “I want to perform well, but I’m nervous,” try this: “I want to perform well, and I’m nervous.”

That one word changes the job in front of you. You no longer have to solve your anxiety before you’re allowed to perform. Your job is simply to perform while allowing whatever nervousness is already there to come along for the ride.

A more workable approach to Stage Fright

I use the word workable deliberately. Something is workable when you can function effectively within it. Your performance doesn’t need to feel perfect, and you don’t need complete calm. You don’t even need to enjoy every sensation you’re experiencing.

You need enough freedom from the struggle with anxiety to do what you came there to do.

So rather than asking, How can I make sure I don’t get nervous? ask, How can I keep Stage Fright from interfering so much with my performance? That’s a goal you can actually work toward.

Use the READ method when Stage Fright appears

The approach I teach performers is called the READ method: Remember, Engage, Accept, Detach.

Remember the core values that give you the courage and commitment to stand up to your anxiety.

Engage fully in performing.

Accept anxious thoughts or feelings each time they disrupt your concentration, rather than fighting them, and return your attention to performing.

Detachment from your anxiety follows, allowing you to enjoy a more workable situation.

The order matters. You don’t command yourself to detach. Detachment is the result of what comes before it.

1. Remember why performing matters

Acceptance isn’t always comfortable. If your hands are trembling or your mind is telling you to get out of there, staying in the situation can take courage. That’s where Remember comes in.

Call to mind the values that brought you there in the first place. Maybe you value artistic expression, connection, growth, courage, excellence, serving the music, telling the story, or being part of an ensemble. Your particular values will depend on you and the situation.

They give you a reason to say, This matters enough to me that I’m willing to experience some discomfort.

2. Engage in the performance

Next, put your attention where it belongs: on performing. Listen to the phrase you’re playing. Respond to your scene partner. Feel the movement. Sing the line. Communicate the lyric. Connect with the audience.

Whatever your particular art requires, engage in the task at hand. This isn’t distraction in the sense of pretending your nervousness isn’t there. You’re deliberately giving your limited attention to the thing that deserves it most.

3. Accept the nervousness when it interrupts you

Your anxiety probably won’t politely disappear because you’ve decided to concentrate. Your Internal Bodyguard may interrupt with thoughts like You’re shaking, They’re judging you, or You’re going to blow this.

That’s where Accept comes in. Notice the thought or sensation without starting an argument with it. You don’t need to agree with the thought, like the feeling, or make it disappear.

Allow it to be there and return your attention to performing. Then do it again the next time you’re interrupted, and again after that. Those returns are the reps that build the skill.

4. Let detachment happen

When you stop wrestling with every nervous thought and sensation, something interesting can happen. Stage Fright begins to lose its central position in the experience.

It may still be there. Your heart may still be beating quickly, and you may still feel butterflies. But you’re no longer organizing the entire performance around getting rid of them. You’re performing.

That’s Detach. It isn’t indifference, and it isn’t something you force. It’s the natural result of remembering what matters, engaging in the performance, and accepting the anxiety that interrupts you.

Practice before the stakes are high

READ is simple, but simple doesn’t mean automatic. Mindfulness is a skill, and like your artistic skills, it gets stronger through repetition.

You don’t want the first time you practice accepting discomfort and returning your attention to the task at hand to be during an important audition or opening night. Practice mindfulness during ordinary activities. Notice when your attention wanders, accept the distraction, and return.

You can also start applying READ in lower-stakes performance situations such as rehearsals, lessons, workshops, informal readings, or playing for a few people. Those are useful reps.

Don’t start avoiding the situations that make you nervous

Stage Fright often whispers a very tempting solution: Don’t do it. Skip the audition. Cancel the performance. Don’t volunteer. Turn down the opportunity.

Avoiding the situation may make you feel better immediately because you’ve removed the threat. But it also means Stage Fright has started making decisions for you.

That’s another reason your values matter. Remembering why performing is important to you can provide the commitment you need to keep showing up even when your Internal Bodyguard would prefer that you run for the exit.

So, can you really overcome Stage Fright?

Yes, if we use a workable definition of overcoming it. You may still occasionally get nervous. You may even encounter a performance where Stage Fright catches you off guard. That doesn’t put you back at square one.

The real progress is that nervousness becomes less capable of hijacking the performance. You get better at noticing it, accepting it, and returning your attention to what you’re there to do.

The goal isn’t to become a performer who never experiences Stage Fright. It’s to become a performer who knows what to do when it arrives.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get rid of Stage Fright completely?

Trying to eliminate Stage Fright completely sets you up for a dead man’s goal. Anxiety is a normal response that can appear whenever you feel watched, judged, and threatened by the consequences of that judgment. A more useful goal is making Stage Fright less disruptive so you can perform effectively when nervousness appears.

How do I stop Stage Fright before a performance?

Don’t make eliminating your nerves the job. Before performing, reconnect with why the performance matters to you and begin directing your attention toward the task ahead. If nervous thoughts or physical sensations appear, allow them to be present rather than starting a struggle with them.

Can I perform well even if I’m nervous?

Absolutely. Feeling nervous and performing effectively can happen at the same time. One of the most useful shifts you can make is to stop treating calm as a prerequisite for a good performance.

Why does trying to calm myself down sometimes make me more nervous?

Trying to force yourself to calm down can turn your attention toward monitoring your anxiety. You start checking your heartbeat, your shaking, your breathing, or your thoughts to see whether they’re improving. That struggle can consume attention you need for performing.

Does Stage Fright mean I’m not confident enough?

Not necessarily. Many capable, well-prepared performers become nervous when the stakes are high. Stage Fright can interfere with confidence you already possess rather than proving that confidence is missing.

Does mindfulness mean ignoring my anxiety?

No. It’s almost the opposite. You acknowledge nervous thoughts and feelings rather than pretending they’re not there. You simply stop making them the center of your attention and return to the task at hand.

What if my Stage Fright is severe?

Stage Fright exists on a spectrum. If anxiety is severely interfering with your ability to perform, work, study, or function in daily life, getting individualized help from an appropriate qualified professional may make sense. The goal of this page is to provide practical educational guidance for handling performance-related nervousness, not to diagnose or treat a medical or mental health condition.

Where to go from here

If you’d like to understand what’s happening when Stage Fright strikes, read Stage Fright: Why It Happens and How to Tame It.

If you want to go deeper into the four-step approach described here, see The READ Method: Four Steps to Tame Stage Fright.

And if you want to experience the Perform with Confidence approach firsthand, you can begin with the free introductory lesson.

Dr. David Lee Fish, Ph.D. developed the READ method.
