Your brain is responding to a different set of conditions than it encountered in practice.

Preparation builds your ability. Stage Fright can interfere with your access to that ability when the stakes feel high.

Experienced performers can still struggle with performance anxiety because experience doesn’t remove audience, judgment, or threat.

More practice can improve your skill, but more practice alone won’t necessarily solve Stage Fright.

The goal isn’t to eliminate nervousness. It’s to make the performance more workable.

Why do I still get Stage Fright even though I’m prepared?

Because preparation and performance ask your brain to do two different things. Preparation builds your ability. Performance asks you to use that ability while your brain is also evaluating audience, judgment, risk, and consequences.

Your practice wasn’t fake, and your ability didn’t disappear when you walked on stage. Stage Fright can blunt your edge and keep you from fully deploying the artistry you already own.

That’s what makes the experience so frustrating. You know what you can do because you’ve done it hundreds of times. Then the moment arrives, the conditions change, and suddenly something seems to get in the way.

The practice room and the stage are different situations

A practice room is built for improvement. You can stop, start again, fix a mistake, repeat a difficult passage, and experiment without much consequence.

Performance changes the equation:

Audience + Judgment + Threat = Stage Fright

The audience might be a concert hall full of people, a panel of judges, a teacher, a casting director, or one person whose opinion matters deeply to you. What matters is that you feel observed, judged, and that something important may be at stake.

That perceived threat might involve embarrassment, disappointment, losing an opportunity, letting someone down, or simply failing to give the performance you’ve worked hard to give.

Those conditions usually weren’t present while you were practicing alone. The ability didn’t change. The situation did.

Your Internal Bodyguard is doing its job

The surge you feel before performing isn’t a malfunction. It’s your brain trying to protect you.

A small structure in the brain called the amygdala helps detect threats. I call it your Internal Bodyguard. When it senses danger, it can help trigger the body’s stress response, preparing you to fight, flee, or freeze.

Your heart may beat faster. Your muscles may tighten. Your hands may shake. Your attention can narrow, and something familiar can suddenly become harder to access.

Those reactions can be useful when the danger is physical. They’re considerably less useful when the “threat” is walking onto a stage to perform something you already know.

Your Internal Bodyguard isn’t trying to sabotage you. It’s trying to protect you in a situation it has interpreted as threatening.

More preparation isn’t always the answer

This is where many performers get trapped. The natural response to a difficult performance is, “I need to practice more.”

Sometimes you do. Preparation matters, and you need to know your material. But if you can perform it reliably in practice, more repetition alone may not address what happens when an audience enters the picture.

You can know every note, line, movement, cue, and detail and still experience Stage Fright (aka performance anxiety).

That’s because the problem may not be knowledge. It may be access under pressure.

You’ve built the ability. Now you need the skill of accessing it while your Internal Bodyguard is making noise.

Why experienced performers still get Stage Fright

Many performers assume Stage Fright should disappear once they’re experienced enough. It seems logical. If you’ve spent years practicing, performing, and developing your craft, why would you still be nervous?

Because experience doesn’t remove the conditions that create Stage Fright. In some situations, experience can even raise the stakes.

An established musician may care deeply about an important concert. An actor may feel more pressure because a role matters to their career. A dancer may face greater expectations as the opportunities become more important. A singer may have more to lose at a high-profile audition than at one early in their training.

The presence of nerves doesn’t prove that you lack confidence or ability. Sometimes it simply means the performance matters to you.

The better question isn’t “Why am I nervous?”

“Why am I nervous if I’m prepared?” is an understandable question, but it keeps the focus on getting rid of the feeling.

A more useful question is, “How do I perform effectively while nervous?”

That shift changes the problem. Instead of measuring success by whether anxiety appears, you begin developing the skill of performing while it is present.

Fighting the nerves can become part of the problem

Most performers don’t just experience nervousness. They also start fighting it:

“I shouldn’t be nervous.”

“I need to calm down.”

“I have to get rid of this before I perform.”

That struggle takes attention. The more energy you spend monitoring your anxiety and trying to push it away, the less attention you have available for performing.

You end up playing Thought Whack-A-Mole. An anxious thought appears, you try to knock it down, and another one pops up. Pretty soon you’re performing two tasks at once: the actual performance and a private battle with your own mind.

The problem isn’t simply that you’re nervous. It’s that you’re spending valuable attention fighting the nervousness.

What to do when you’re prepared but still nervous

You don’t need to win an argument with your nerves. You need something simple enough to use while you’re performing. That’s where the READ method comes in.

Remember the core values that give you the courage and commitment to stand up to your anxiety.

Engage fully in performing.

Accept anxious thoughts or feelings each time they disrupt your concentration, rather than fighting them, and return your attention to performing.

Detachment from your anxiety follows, allowing you to enjoy a more workable situation.

For many performers, Accept is the counterintuitive part. Acceptance doesn’t mean liking the nervousness or giving in to it. It means allowing the feeling to be there without making getting rid of it your new job.

Then you return your attention to performing. When anxiety interrupts again, you accept it and return again.

The return is the rep. Like any skill, mindfulness gets stronger through repetition.

What should I actually aim for?

Not a flawless performance with no nerves. That’s a dead man’s goal, the kind only a dead person could guarantee.

A more useful question is, “How unworkable does anxiety make this performance situation for me, and in what specific ways?”

Your goals might be to recover faster after a mistake, stay connected to the music longer, worry less about judgment, remain more engaged with your scene partner, or finish a performance without letting one difficult moment take over.

Those are workable goals. They give you somewhere to go without requiring you to stop being human first.

Frequently asked questions

Does getting Stage Fright mean I’m not prepared enough?

No. Preparation and Stage Fright are different issues. Preparation builds your ability. Performance anxiety can interfere with your access to that ability when audience, judgment, and threat are present.

Why do I feel nervous when I know I can do it?

Because knowing you can perform and feeling threatened while performing are different experiences. Your ability can remain intact while your Internal Bodyguard responds to the situation as though something important is at risk.

Should I practice more if I have Stage Fright?

Practice is essential when the material needs work, but more practice alone doesn’t necessarily solve Stage Fright. You also need experience applying your performance skills while nervousness is present.

Do professional performers still get Stage Fright?

Yes. Experience doesn’t eliminate audience, judgment, or threat. Skilled performers can still become nervous when the stakes feel high, even after years of successful performances.

Will I eventually stop getting nervous?

You may become less nervous in many situations, but permanently eliminating Stage Fright isn’t the target. A more workable goal is for nervousness to interfere less with your ability to perform.

Where to go from here

If Stage Fright causes your actual performance to drop, see Why Do I Perform Worse on Stage Than I Do in Practice?

If your hands or body shake under pressure, see Why Do I Shake on Stage and Not When I Practice?

If you sometimes lock up completely, see Why Do I Freeze on Stage?

If memory is the main problem, see Why Do I Forget What I Practiced?

The READ Method: Four Steps to Tame Stage Fright explains the framework for remembering what matters, engaging in performing, accepting interruptions, and allowing detachment to follow.

If you’d rather experience the approach firsthand, the free intro lesson for Perform with Confidence gives you a practical introduction at no cost and with no card required.

Dr. David Lee Fish, Ph.D. is a performance anxiety specialist and the founder of Rise Up Eight.
